March 15, 2023

Speakable works on a variety of devices, including Chromebooks, but there are some important steps you need to follow to get it working properly. In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps to use Speakable speaking assignments on a Chromebook.

Step 1: Access Speakable in the Chrome Browser

To use Speakable on a Chromebook, you’ll need to access it through the Chrome browser. Open the Chrome browser on your Chromebook and navigate to the Speakable website. If you’re not already signed in to your Speakable account, sign in or create an account. Once you’re logged in, you’ll see a list of your active assignments.

Step 2: Give Speakable Mic Permissions

To use Speakable, you’ll need to give it permission to access your microphone. When you first access a Speakable assignment, you’ll be prompted to give mic permissions. Click “Allow” to give Speakable access to your microphone. If you accidentally clicked “Deny” or if you’re having trouble with your microphone, you can change your mic permissions in the Chrome browser settings. To do this, click the three dots in the top right corner of the Chrome browser and select “Settings”. Scroll down to the “Privacy and security” section and click “Site settings”. Scroll down to “Microphone” and click it. Find Speakable in the list of websites and click the trash can icon to remove it. Then, go back to the Speakable assignment and click “Allow” when prompted to give mic permissions again.

Step 3: Complete the Speaking Assignment

Once you’ve given Speakable mic permissions, you’re ready to complete the speaking assignment. Click the “Start” button to begin Speaking. Speakable will give you a prompt or a set of instructions to follow. Speak your response into your microphone, following the prompt or instructions.

Step 4: Clear Browser Cache If You Encounter Issues

If you encounter issues when using Speakable, such as microphone not working, audio playback issues or site not loading, it is recommended to clear the browser cache and try again. Here's how you can clear the cache in Chrome:

  • Open the Chrome browser and click the three dots in the top right corner of the browser
  • Select “More Tools” and then “Clear browsing data”
  • In the popup, select the time range to clear (e.g. “All time”)
  • Select the checkboxes for “Cookies and other site data” and “Cached images and files”
  • Click “Clear data”

Conclusion

Using Speakable speaking assignments on a Chromebook is easy and effective, as long as you follow the steps outlined above. Remember to give Speakable mic permissions, complete the assignment, and clear browser cache if you encounter issues. With Speakable, teachers can create engaging speaking assignments, and students can improve their speaking skills by practicing speaking and listening in a digital classroom environment.
